Today we have tested the stream, streaming server, and – obviously – internet connection. Unfortunately the broadband connection was extremely unstable today – probably because of some road works by the ISP. Later in the afternoon I was able to stream succesfully using our standard scripts. I adjusted the web interface back to 4:3 format (from 16:9 we used with Transmittance #1.5), mounted the projector, while people arrived. I was happy to welcome Jakob Leben (of the SuperCollider 3.5/6 QT GUI fame) who has already prepared things for use of SenseStage and DataNetwork. He happily threw himself onto testing the hardware, and soon enough others arrived for a first meeting/session.
Others present today were Loup Abramovici, Maja Šorli, Nataša Živkovič, Jelena Ždrale and Maja Delak. Matija Ferlin came later on. We will welcome Boštjan Božič in next few days, Ana Pečar on saturday, as well as online presence of Igor Štromajer.
We have been talking about freedom, software and code, privacy and ownership/property (well, mainly me and Jakob), about themes of loneliness in technologically developed world and possibilities how to develop a menu of choices for online public. There was already a feature request (how to be able to bring online chat comments/feedback into the space for performers to see).
I’m seriously looking forward to this!
Tobacco001 day zero

Today we have arrived with most of our equipment at Tobacco 001 cultural centre gallery. The technicians from MGML (Museum and galleries of Ljubljana) were fast and effective. There was also great help from Jure from Kapelica gallery (Zavod k6/4 // Kersnikova). So now have internet connection – yet untested for stream – created a local network, one quad-core PC for stream and moderator on chat, yet unpacked quad-code PC for video, a table (we are missing two more), 2 LED floor lights ready to be controlled with USB-DMX controller and SuperCollider/DataNetwork, Edirol V8 and V4 video mixer, many wireless cameras, and more surveillance cameras, and even more cameras. Oh, and I almost forgot, quite a lot of various cables.
Tomorrow we need to setup and test the stream, mount at least one projector and test it. Later in the evening we are meeting with everyone for a first meeting and session.

Today we visited ESC gallery in Graz, where we started/participated in a workshop connected to the project Mur.sat.
Basicaly mur.sat is about launching a nano-satellite in a low earth orbit. The satellite stays there for about 3-6 weeks after which it enters atmosphere and burns. In the meantime it transmits various data depending on design.
The launch date is planned (at the moment) in march 2012. While the satelite will be in orbit ESC will organize a local ‘space center’.
At the moment there are different efforts for satellite listening and predicting. The fact is, there are numerous satellites in earth orbit. Some of them (or most of them) actually transmit open data (like weather satellites).
For our Transmittance #1.5 project phase we will use software for predicting movements and positions of satellites. ‘Predict‘ uses data (TLE / two line elements) updates (what is really in the sky, where and when) published by NORAD. This data is published in real-time through UNIX sockets. There’s a simple perl script written at ESC by Norbert Math that listens to this information and broadcasts it to the local net using OSC (open sound control). This can be picked up by any OSC-aware software – like Pure Data for example.
